Sardegna is a beautiful island in Italy, to the West of the main peninsula. The second largest island of the Mediterranean, Sargdegna enjoys a low population density and offers so many beautiful vistas and historical sites! Cagliari is the main city and in addition to Cagliari, both Olbia and Alghero also have airports. The flight time from the main Italian peninsula (called ‘il continente’ by Sardegnans) is just about an hour.

Sardegna is noted for its exceptional seacoast and very ancient ruins. The most famous part of the seacoast is the on the Northeast side, called Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast, named for the crystal clear water). This area was ‘discovered’ in the 1960's and beautiful resorts and towns soon grew up around the magnificent seashore and scenery. The East and South coasts offer beautiful sandy beaches and small harbors, while the West coast is dotted with gorgeous coves and lovely scenery. The seashore is absolutely stunning and the water is amazingly clear all around the island, which also makes it a mecca for yachting!
Inland Sardegna is rugged and arid with geologically very interesting landscapes and the abundant reddish stone characterizes the island. Very notable are the ancient sites, including the famous Nuraghi in the interior (Barumini is a UNESCO world heritage site) and the remarkable seaside Phoenician towns of Nora and Tharros.
Sardegna is worth a longer stay, but most travellers can only dedicate 3 or 4 days of their vacation to the island, in which case we recommend flying to Olbia and enjoying the extremely romantic Costa Smeralda, which offers a range of accommodations from three-stars up to the super-luxurious Cala di Volpe, Pitrizza and Romizzano Hotels. Most Sardegnan hotels and restaurants are open for the season from April ‘till early October. And by the way, Saredegna is a fabulous honeymoon destination!
If you can devote a full week or more to Sardegna (it’s great!), we recommend something on these lines:
Day 1
Arrive at Cagliari & rent a car. Drive south to Pula or Santa Margherita for the stay.
Day 2
Relax and explore the area including the ancient site at Nora.
Day 3
Relax and take a drive to the Southwest portion of the island including Sant’Antioco.
Day 4
Drive north via Cagliari’s town center to Burumini to see the Nuraghi at the UNESCO site. Continue to Orosei.
Day 5
Relax and enjoy the tranquil beaches of Orosei!
Day 6
Drive north along the coast to San Paolo (visit the rock formation of La Tavolara by boat) and continue to the resort town of Porto Cervo.
Day 7/8
Relax and explore the Costa Smeralda
Day 9
Fly from Olbia to Milano or Roma for your connection to the US or for an extended vacation on the continente - main Italian Peninsula
